Andrew Butcher – Chief Executive Officer / Founding Principal

Andrew ButcherAndrew, is an accomplished social entrepreneur with expertise in the fields of community development, renewable energy, social innovation and environmental justice.

Andrew holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Management from the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University, and a Bachelors in Political Science from American University in Washington DC. He participated in the Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs in St. Louis, and holds certificates from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the National Outdoor Leadership Schools (NOLS).
 
A Colorado native, and the youngest of 5 older sisters, Andrew is a committed practitioner of creative social and environmental responsibility. He has installed solar panels in South America, deconstructed buildings in Colorado, and farmed Brownfields in Pittsburgh. Since co-founding GTECH in 2007, Andrew has been featured on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, presented at the Brookings Institute, The National Vacant Properties Conference, The Imagining Solutions Conference and has been honored at the White House as an emerging leader in the field of social innovation. In 2008, Andrew was awarded a prestigious, international Echoing Green Fellowship for social entrepreneurs with business partner Chris Koch.
 
GTECH is a 501(c)3 Social Enterprise based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. GTECH transitions environmental liabilities through creating community development opportunities in the green economy. By reclaiming urban vacancy and empowering communities through green strategies, GTECH helps to establish tangible value and opportunities in the most blighted and marginalized places.
 
He sits on the Boards of GTECH, Nine Mile Run Watershed Association, and Manchester Bidwell’s Green Tech Advisory Board. He lives in Pittsburgh, near a park with his wife Julie and dog Jasper-Bacon. His favorite words are gumption & grit and he enjoys sandwiches outside.
 
 
 
 
 
 

Chris Koch – Chief Operating Officer / Founding Principal

Chris KochBefore starting GTECH, Chris spent years working in major cities around the country on systemic economic development projects in the private and public sectors. Her background is in the areas of Community and Economic Development, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Project Management, and Social Enterprise.

Chris has provided expertise on urban blight reduction strategies and social entrepreneurship to organizations such as the Brookings Institute, Great Lakes Urban Exchange, and Princeton University. Chris holds a Masters of Public Policy and Management from the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University, and a BS in History from the same. In 2008, Chris was named an Echoing Green fellow, and in 2009 GTECH was selected as one of 19 of the most innovative social enterprises worldwide, out of a pool of 1500 applicants.
 
 
 

Maureen "Mo" Copeland – Community Programs Manager

Maureen CopelandAs a life-long resident of southwestern PA, with a background in environmental science, Mo is committed to improving the environmental quality of her favorite city where she is bridging communities with solutions.

Mo started her studies at Allegheny College, completing internships at a bio-intensive farm near York, PA, at the Ecosystem Center in Woods Hole, MA, and on a Long Term Ecological Research site. Coming home after college, she joined the ‘04-‘05 PULSE team, interning at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, conducting the regional hunger study, while educating residents about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Returning to graduate school, she furthered her environmental studies, completing a Masters in Environmental Science and Management. During her time there, she interned at the Environmental Management Assistance Program at the Small Business Development Center and GTECH. After graduation, she joined the GTECH team full time, putting her environmental studies and love of the region to work. She is a co-coordinator for the 2009 Three Rivers Bioneers Conference.
 
 
 
 
 

Khari Mosley – Director of Green Economy Initiatives, Green For All Regional Liaison

Khari MosleyA Pittsburgh native, Khari is dedicated to social justice and environmental responsibility, making him the perfect fit for both GTECH and Green For All. With his political expertise and commitment to community, Khari’s work is a critical part of the GTECH model.

Before coming to GTECH, Khari was the National Political/Policy Director for the League of Young Voters/Education Fund. He also is the elected democratic chairman of Pittsburgh's 22nd Ward. Khari has received a number of awards from various organizations including: Pittsburgh Acorn, Pittsburgh Magazine, the Pittsburgh League of Women Voters, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell. He sits on several boards including: Bethesda Presbyterian Church Center, The Pgh Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, Pgh ACLU, Pgh Chapter Americans for Democratic Action, and The Mattress Factory, a contemporary art museum. He attended Indiana University of PA where studied political-science. Khari lives in Pittsburgh, with his wife Chelsa and their newborn son Thaddeus.
 
 
 
 

Troy Hottle – Reclamation Projects Manager

Troy HottleOhio native Troy Hottle serves as GTECH's Reclamation Projects Manager and has a background in community-based biofuels, bioenergy solutions and horticulture. Troy works to refine and develop the strategies utilized for vacant land and spends quite a bit of time outdoors during the planting season.

Troy attended Hiram College where he earned a BA in Sociology. He traveled to more than ten countries throughout the world, studying at social and biological systems and how they interact with the environment. While there he helped manage a student-run food cooperative, in addition to heading up a public bike program on the campus. Troy has worked for Steel City Biofuels as well as Allegheny County Cooperative Extension. His current interests include permaculture design, aikido, working on his house and volunteering as a Master Gardener.
 
 
 
 

Asa Watten – ReFuel Pgh Project Manager

Asa WattenAsa is developing ReFuel Pgh, a waste cooking oil to fuel program in partnership with Fossil Free Fuel. He has worked in renewable energy project development and education at Penn State Extension and Steel City Biofuels and assisted non-profits such as Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities and Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship Training Program.

Asa holds a B.S. in Political Science from Carnegie Mellon University and has a passion for the visual display of our often-unseen impact on the environment, for which he received several awards. Asa enjoys gardening, cycling and kite flying and his favorite sandwich is a buffalo-seitan melt from Spak Bros.
 
 
 

Claire Miziolek – SCA Green Cities Fellow

Claire MiziolekClaire Miziolek comes to GTECH Strategies as an SCA Green Cities Fellow from Baltimore, Maryland where she was born and raised. After graduating from Cornell University with a double major in Economics and Psychology, she moved to Pittsburgh to pursue a career in environmental sustainability.

Growing up in Baltimore City, Claire witnessed many serious issues such as poverty, violence, and addiction. This fueled her passion for social justice from a young age. In Baltimore, she volunteered with the Center for Poverty Solutions and the local food bank. In high school, she became more aware of the state of the environment and her passion expanded to include bringing an end to global warming. These passions continued when Claire attended Cornell University, as she took many environmental courses and became a Master Composter. Through college, she had several internships including teaching 3rd graders at a Baltimore City public school, compiling data at the Social Security Administration, and researching at an environmental consulting non-profit. Since age 14, whenever she's home in Baltimore, Claire works at Greg's Bagels, a fantastic bagel shop. After graduating from Cornell with a double major in Economics and Psychology, she moved to Pittsburgh to pursue a career in environmental sustainability and now loves her work through the SCA at GTECH Strategies where she is able to help solve problems of both environmental sustainability and social justice. She has been very fortunate to be able to travel to such locations as the Galapagos Islands, Bangladesh, and Australia. She is a long-time vegetarian and enjoys music, nature, and coffee.
 
 
 
 

Ben Horwitz – Policy Associate

Ben HorwitzA Saint Louis native, Ben is a second-year graduate student at Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University in Public Policy and Management. He is a committed professional in public policy implementation with experience in project management, online data collection and analysis, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Ben received his BA in International Studies from American University where he completed his thesis on "Sustainable Human Development and Reproductive Health in Central America." After American University, Ben worked for SRA International, Inc. providing information systems and data analysis support to the EPA Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization. Through his work at SRA and his graduate education at Heinz College, Ben has become a committed professional dedicated to making data-driven, evidence-based decisions in organizations as well as in public policy analysis and implementation. Ben is most particularly interested in working on issues related to sustainable development and revitalization.

Matthew Ciccone – Founding Principal and Current Board Chair of GTECH

A native Pittsburgher, Matthew is committed to strengthening the nonprofit community and works tirelessly to create positive community change through innovation, action, and entrepreneurship.

Elected as Chair in August 2008, Matthew strongly believes in GTECH’s mission and work in the community. Collaborating closely with GTECH’s Board and Management Team, Matthew helps steer GTECH’s organizational growth and vision for change. A Development Manager with Chapman Properties, an award-winning commercial “Brownfield” developer, Matthew holds a Masters in Urban Design from Carnegie Mellon University, a Masters of Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College, and a Bachelors of History from Denison University.
